Faking it!

Fool yourself for a change!

It is probably one of the most hilarious movie scenes from the last century. Meg Ryan shows a disturbed Billy Christal how easy women can fake an orgasm. People are not always sincere and that is usually judged. One of the challenges in life after all, is being loyal to your own believes. Still, you can shoot yourself in the foot when you are just way too honest.

When you have a bad day you can obviously stay in bed all day with the curtains closed and your head under a pillow. Or if things don’t go your way, you can snap at your co-workers or you can sulk around your family and ruin everyone’s mood. Okay, you are your authentic self at that moment and you show your feelings, but does that improve your mood? Probably not, you only feel worse.

Reason for this is that cause and effect run uncontrollable through the human mind. We not only grumble because we are mad but we also get annoyed because we are so grumpy. Watch a funny movie on TV with a pen clenched between your teeth and later with the pen between your lips. In the first case your face starts to smile and you like the movie more then in the second case, were your face would automatically turn into a wry face.

Turn around cause and effect and it will work in your advantage. Ask someone to do you a small favor and he will think he likes you more, because he did something for you. When you have a bad day, you can stay under the covers, but you can also pick yourself up and drag yourself out of the black hole. Meet up with friends, exercise or prepare a nice meal. Act if you are happy and your mood will change.

Of course this does not imply that a fake orgasm is just as good as a real one. Researcher Gert Holstege proved through brain scans that there is a big difference between fake and real orgasms. With a real one the brain stops for a short while and you don’t experience things like fear. With a fake one, your brain is working overtime because you not only have to fake the orgasm you also need to fake the facial expressions.

So if you want to fake it….just fool yourself out of your bad mood and let the rest be the real thing.
