Freakishly weird or just magnificently interesting.

The other day there was a really interesting item in the news. Okay, they usually show interesting topics but this was something different. They had a piece about an exhibition and that’s something we rarely see on the news. ‘It must be something special’ I thought, and I was right.

The BODIES Exhibition, a phenomenal look at the phenomenon we call the human body, is hitting Amsterdam from November 25th, 2006 till March 15th, 2007 – Beurs van Berlage.

Some people think it’s tasteless and bizarre, others find it very interesting and wonderful. I admit at first I was a bit grossed out, but after seeing the video’s (About the exhibition – video) I changed my mind and I am rather intrigued by the exhibition.

So, what do you think?

I like what is hidden inside bodies to stay hidden inside bodies... On the other hand, I hope to get to Antwerp soon to see an exhibition of mughal jewellery - now that's much more appealing than human body-parts, to my way of thinking!

If I had the chance I would visit the exhibition and take my child. Yes, I would be a bit freaked out by the fact that they are real bodies, but there is so much to learn and appreciate. ( I trust no one was killed during the making of the exhibits. )

kat - the bodies come from China and although the curators have insisted the bodies were obtained legally, there is still quite a lot of debate about whether they are actually execution victims - mainly falun gong - certainly a similar exhibition called Body Works was unable to prove the 'donors' or families consented.

I would love to see it. I think it's fascinating. The Falun Gong allegations are disturbing, but even if they're true, I highly doubt the people were killed for their bodies...more likely they were killed for unrelated political reasons, and their bodies subsequently expropriated for this purpose.

It makes me wonder though if I'd be willing to donate my body (after death of course) to art. Science, yes, medicine, yes, but art? Not sure.

Brilliant! A bit spooky yeah, but what a great way to see how the human body works. As long as it's all above board and legal, I see nowt wrong with it. If it was closer e.g. in the right country, I reckon I would go and see it myself. :]

I never wanted to be a doctor either, but I do like to know how things work or how things look on the inside. So I am still going with the intrigued for now, Lord Hutton

Well, some people like it and some are disgusted by it, Qaminante. Either way is okay! I hope you will enjoy Mughal jewellery exhibition :)

I don’t think people were actually killed for this, Kat. In the news they said it were unclaimed bodies.
Maybe you are still able to see the exhibition one day, it’s travelling around the world…..surely it will come to London one day :)

I’ve read about the controversy too, Snowqueen. Apparently no one is able to tell where the bodies came from. Kind of strange!

That is an interesting question, Zoom! I don’t think I want to end up in a display case, do you? Or how about that “body farm” in the USA? I don’t want to end up there either!

Check the site regularly, DoGGa. I am sure they will keep adding dates all the time :)

Hmmz…. Just did some googling and apparently you UK people just missed it! The Exhibition was in Earls Court - London earlier this year.

If the the bodies weren't officially donated and they haven't got the papers to prove it, I not going. No way!

Snowqueen - I had heard about the other exhibition but hadn't tied the two together. The very thought that these could be the bodies of execution victims has made my blood run cold. I hope they never come anywhere near the UK - and Amsterdam seems to close to me. In fact anywhere in the world is too damn close.

Fair enough, Aoj. I guess it just not everybody’s cup of tea.

Again, Kat, I don’t know if they were execution victims or not. I haven’t found any proof of that on the internet. I can only share what has been in the news in the Netherlands:

"These are the bodies of people who lived in China. According to Guus Bakker, director of the Beurs van Berlage, a lot of people die on the streets in China. The police store the bodies for 30 days. After that period, if nobody claims the body, the police are allowed to donate the bodies to science or education.”
